History

The flag of the Republic of Abkhazia was created in 1991 by artist Valeri Gamgia and officially adopted on 23 July 1992. Its seven green and white stripes symbolize religious tolerance and the coexistence of Islam and Christianity, as well as youth and life. The red canton draws on the banner of the medieval Kingdom of Abkhazia and bears an open white hand as a historic symbol of statehood, greeting friends and warning enemies. The seven stars represent the seven historic regions of Abkhazia.
