The flag of the Region of Murcia is a dark crimson field bearing four golden castles in the upper hoist and seven golden crowns arranged in the lower fly.
The flag of the Region of Murcia derives from the historic coat of arms of Murcia and was officially adopted with the Statute of Autonomy in 1982. Its crimson field recalls historic ties to Castile and blood shed in the region’s defensive struggles. The four castles represent the principal fortified towns associated with Murcia’s medieval defensive character, and the seven crowns commemorate the royal crowns granted to Murcia by successive Castilian monarchs in recognition of its loyalty and strategic importance, a tradition linked to the 13th-century royal grant of arms by Alfonso X.
