History
The flag of Zeeland was officially adopted on 14 January 1949. Its red lion, taken from the historic coat of arms of the county, symbolizes the province’s courage and identity. The white-and-blue wavy bands represent the sea and Zeeland’s long struggle against water, a symbolism that became especially resonant after the 1953 North Sea flood.
