The flag of Valle d'Aosta was officially adopted on 16 March 2006. Its design dates to 1942, when canon Joseph Bréan proposed a black-and-red bicolor based on the colors of the 16th-century Duchy of Aosta coat of arms. The design was used by anti-fascist resistance movements during World War II and remained in unofficial use for decades before receiving formal legal status.
