Historical flag of Northern Ireland featuring a red St George’s cross on white, with a central six-pointed star bearing a red hand and topped by a crown.
This flag was used by the Government of Northern Ireland from 1953 until the suspension of Stormont in 1972 and is commonly known as the Ulster Banner. Its design is based on the arms granted to Northern Ireland in 1924. The six-pointed star represents the six counties of Northern Ireland, the red hand is the historic Red Hand of Ulster, and the crown signifies loyalty to the British monarch. It first flew on 29 May 1953 for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Although it later lost official status, it has continued to appear unofficially, especially in some sporting contexts and among unionist and loyalist groups.
