Yellow flag with a central circular emblem showing a map of Taiwan, a small Republic of China flag, and a ring of plum blossoms, with red Chinese characters along the bottom.
The small flag shown within the emblem uses the design of the flag of the Republic of China: a red field with a blue canton bearing a white sun with twelve rays. That design was first drawn by Lu Haodong in 1895, combined with the red field in 1906, and officially adopted as the national flag on 5 May 1921. Its symbolism associates the blue sky with liberty, the white sun’s twelve rays with the twelve two-hour periods of the day or the twelve months, and the red field with sacrifice and the Three Principles of the People.
