The flag of South Dakota features a sky-blue field with the state seal in white and dark blue at the center, surrounded by a golden sunburst and gold lettering reading “SOUTH DAKOTA” and “THE MOUNT RUSHMORE STATE.”
The current flag of South Dakota was adopted on November 9, 1992. It evolved from a 1909 two-sided design by Ida Anding McNeil that showed a golden sun on one side and the state seal on the other. In 1963 the design was revised to combine the seal and sun on one side, and in 1992 the inscription was changed from “The Sunshine State” to “The Mount Rushmore State.” The sky-blue field represents the state’s broad skies, while the sunburst recalls the former nickname “The Sunshine State.”
