Historic flag of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, showing a large red rectangle on a white field.
This flag was historically used by Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah under the Al Qasimi ruling family. The design predates the 1820 General Maritime Treaty with Britain; the white background was introduced through that treaty as a symbol of peace, while the red element represented loyalty to the Prophet Muhammad and shared Islamic heritage. It was later superseded by the national flag of the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
