Saint Lucia adopted this flag on 1 March 1967 when it became an associated state of the United Kingdom, and it remained in use after independence in 1979. The design was created by Saint Lucian artist Dunstan St. Omer. The cerulean blue field represents fidelity, the tropical sky, and the surrounding Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The black and white triangles symbolize African and European cultural influences and unity, while the gold triangle represents sunshine, prosperity, and a bright future. The triangular composition evokes the twin Pitons of Soufrière, a national symbol of hope and aspiration.
