The flag of Saint Helena is a British Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the island’s shield in the fly.
Saint Helena uses a British Blue Ensign defaced with the island’s coat of arms in a 1:2 proportion. The present badge was introduced in 1984 after a new coat of arms was granted, replacing an earlier badge used from 1874 that showed the coastline and an East Indiaman. The shield includes a sailing ship and a white-on-blue Cross of Saint George, while the crest features the Saint Helena plover, or wirebird, the island’s endemic official bird. Admiralty authorisation for the flag followed in 1994.
