Montserrat’s flag was adopted in 1960 as a British Blue Ensign with the territory’s coat of arms on the fly. The coat of arms was granted on 10 April 1909 and was enlarged with a white outline in a 1999 redesign. The Union Jack reflects Montserrat’s status as a British Overseas Territory. The arms depict Erin, a personification of Ireland, holding a Celtic harp in reference to the island’s Irish settlers, while the cross symbolizes Christian heritage.
