The flag of Prince Edward Island shows a gold lion on a red chief above a white field with a green island bearing three small oak trees and one large oak tree, bordered on three sides by alternating red and white rectangles.
The flag of Prince Edward Island is an armorial banner derived from the province’s coat of arms. The gold lion on the red chief refers to the Royal Arms of England and also to Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, for whom the island is named. The large oak tree and three oak saplings continue imagery used on the island’s seal from 1769; the three smaller trees represent the historic counties of Kings, Queens, and Prince, while the larger tree symbolizes England and protection. The coat of arms was granted on 30 May 1905, and the flag was formally created by heraldic artist Conrad Swan and adopted by provincial statute on 24 March 1964. The flag’s proportions are 2:3.
