The flag of Palau features a light blue field with a large yellow disk set slightly toward the hoist, representing the moon against the Pacific sky and sea.
The flag of Palau was adopted on 1 January 1981 when the country became independent from the United Nations Trust Territory. Its light blue field represents the surrounding Pacific Ocean and also symbolizes the transition from foreign domination to self-government. The yellow disk represents the full moon, regarded in Palauan culture as the ideal time for activities such as fishing, planting, harvesting, tree-felling, and canoe-building, and it also symbolizes peace, love, and tranquility. The design was created by John Blau Skebong.
