History
This was the former flag of Basra Governorate in Iraq. It remained in use through the early 2000s until a new logo and flag were introduced in late 2022. The emblem’s palm leaves refer to Basra’s date-palm industry, while the water, sails, and sun represent its role as Iraq’s only sea port on the Shatt al-Arab. The oil derrick symbolizes the governorate’s oil wealth.
