The flag of Oklahoma consists of a sky-blue field with a centered Osage buffalo-hide shield bearing six small crosses and seven hanging feathers, overlaid by a crossed peace pipe and olive branch, with the word “OKLAHOMA” in white below.
Oklahoma adopted this flag on April 2, 1925, using a design created by Louise Funk Fluke after a 1924 contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The design replaced an earlier 1911 red state flag with a white star and the number 46. In 1941, the word “OKLAHOMA” was added beneath the shield. The shield represents defense, the peace pipe and olive branch symbolize peace between Native peoples and European-American settlers, and the blue field stands for loyalty and devotion. The colors were further standardized in 1988 and later codified in law in 2006.
