The naval ensign of New York used in 1775 was a white flag charged with a black beaver, a symbol associated with the former Dutch colony of New Netherland and with New York’s fur-trade economy. It was used as a maritime emblem during the opening phase of the American Revolution and is remembered as an example of early colonial and revolutionary vexillology.
