Naval Ensign of Massachusetts

The Naval Ensign of Massachusetts was adopted in its current form in 1971. It is one of the few U.S. state maritime ensigns. The green pine tree reflects New England’s long association with timber, seafaring, and liberty, and the design descends from Revolutionary-era Massachusetts pine tree flags, including a 1776 version that also carried the motto “An Appeal to Heaven.”
