History
Maine’s ensign uses the word “Dirigo,” the state motto meaning “I Lead,” and a pine tree, a longstanding symbol associated with the state. Maine’s broader flag history includes the adoption of a blue state flag with the coat of arms in 1909, replacing the earlier 1901 pine-tree design on a buff field.
