The flag of Nauru features a deep blue field with a thin horizontal gold stripe across the center and a white twelve-pointed star below it near the hoist.
Nauru adopted this flag on 31 January 1968 at independence. The blue field represents the Pacific Ocean, the narrow gold stripe represents the Equator just north of the island, and the white twelve-pointed star marks Nauru’s position south of the Equator and west of the International Date Line. The star’s twelve points represent the island’s twelve original tribes, and its white color refers to the phosphate deposits that once shaped the country’s economy. The design was chosen in a local competition and finalized by an Australian flag maker.
