The current flag of the Falkland Islands was officially adopted on 25 January 1999. It is a British Blue Ensign defaced with the territory’s coat of arms in the fly and is used in a 1:2 proportion. The coat of arms was granted in 1948 and includes a ram representing the islands’ sheep-farming history, three white wavy lines representing the surrounding sea, the ship Desire, and the motto “DESIRE THE RIGHT.” Earlier versions of the flag used earlier badges, including designs introduced in 1876, 1925, and 1948 before the present form was standardized.
