#0003 · national
The national flag of Algeria features two equal vertical bands of green and white with a red crescent and five-pointed star centered across the divide.
Algeria officially adopted this flag on 3 July 1962, just before independence from France. The design draws on earlier Algerian symbols, including the green-and-white flag associated with Emir Abdelkader and Ottoman-era Algerian use of the crescent and star. During the Algerian War of Independence, the National Liberation Front used the design as a unifying emblem. The green is associated with Islam, the white with peace and purity, and the red crescent and star with the Islamic faith; the red also commemorates the blood shed in the struggle for independence.
