The national flag of Ireland is a vertical tricolour of green, white, and orange.
Ireland's national flag is a green-white-orange vertical tricolour in a 1:2 proportion, with green nearest the hoist. The green represents the Gaelic and Catholic tradition, the orange represents the Protestant community associated with William of Orange, and the white symbolizes the hope for lasting peace and unity between them. The design was first unveiled in Waterford in 1848 by Thomas Francis Meagher of the Young Ireland movement, gained wide recognition after it was raised over the General Post Office during the 1916 Easter Rising, and was later adopted by the Irish Free State and recognized in the 1937 Constitution.
White fixed in the centre
The Young Irelanders adopted the tricolour and formalized white in the centre, establishing the familiar arrangement.
Adopted by the Irish Free State
The Irish Free State adopted the tricolour as its flag.
Constitution confirmed the flag
The Constitution formally confirmed the tricolour as Ireland’s national flag.
