The national flag of France is a vertical tricolor of blue, white, and red in three equal bands.
France’s national flag, known as the Tricolore, was officially adopted in 1794 during the French Revolution. Its three equal vertical bands of blue, white, and red grew out of the revolutionary cockade that combined the traditional colors of Paris, blue and red, with royal white. The flag became associated with the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity, survived political changes including the Napoleonic era and the Bourbon Restoration, and has remained the sole flag of France and its territories since 5 March 1848.
First tricolour naval flag adopted
France adopted a tricolour naval jack and ensign with red, white, and blue in a different arrangement from today’s flag.
Current stripe order adopted
The National Convention adopted the blue-white-red tricolour, with equal vertical stripes, as the national flag.
Tricolour design standardized
The tricolour’s design was definitively standardized, after several geometric versions had been used.
Tricolour restored
After the July Revolution, Louis-Philippe restored the blue-white-red flag as France’s national flag.
Constitution defined the flag
The Constitution designated the blue-white-red tricolour, with three equal vertical bands, as the national emblem.
Flag reaffirmed in Constitution
Article 2 of the Fifth Republic’s Constitution reaffirmed the blue-white-red tricolour as the national emblem.
