History
The municipal flag of Hakodate, Hokkaido, was adopted on 11 June 1968. It uses the city emblem established on 13 July 1935. The 2:3 design follows a common Japanese municipal-flag style, placing a distinctive city symbol on a plain field. The blue field represents the sky and sea, the white stylized swirl symbolizes a powerful surge of water and the city's historic seaport, and the red star represents the citizens' eagerness and the city's history.
