The flag of Bermuda is a red British ensign with the Union Flag in the canton and Bermuda’s coat of arms in the fly.
Bermuda uses a British Red Ensign design with the Union Flag signifying its status as a British Overseas Territory. The coat of arms shows a red English lion supporting a shield bearing the wreck of the Sea Venture, the 1609 shipwreck associated with the island’s settlement, and includes the motto “Quo Fata Ferunt.” A blue ensign was used from about 1875 to 1910, and the red-ensign version with the coat of arms was approved on 4 October 1910. In 1999 the arms were slightly reduced in size for clarity. The flag uses the 1:2 proportion standard for British ensigns.
