The flag of Romania is a blue-yellow-red vertical tricolor in a 2:3 proportion. The colors are associated with liberty, justice, and fraternity, with this symbolism traced to the Wallachian uprising of 1821 and the revolutionary tricolor of 1848, which originally appeared in a horizontal arrangement. The vertical form was adopted in 1866 when the United Principalities became Romania. During the communist period after 1948, the same tricolor was used with a state emblem, and the plain flag was restored after the 1989 revolution. Later laws defined and clarified the official shades as cobalt blue, chrome yellow, and vermilion red.
