The flag of the Canton of Vaud is a horizontal bicolor of white over green, with the gold motto “LIBERTÉ ET PATRIE” outlined in black across the white upper half.
The flag of Vaud dates from 1803, when the region became a canton. Its white and green colors derive from the revolutionary colors associated with the Vaudois movement that opposed Bernese rule in the 1790s. The design is linked to ideals of liberty and purity above the fertile landscape of Vaud.
