Dark blue Kansas state banner with the word “KANSAS” in gold above a large sunflower enclosing the state seal, with a scalloped lower edge and gold fringe.
Kansas used this state banner from 1925 to 1927. It was designed by Hazel Avery for a Fourth of July parade and featured the state seal within a large sunflower, with the name of the state below the seal in the original banner design. The sunflower represented the state flower, and the banner was intended to hang from a horizontal bar rather than compete visually with the United States flag. Its awkward display and rejection for exhibition in Washington, D.C., led Kansas to adopt a rectangular state flag in 1927.
