The flag of the Bolivian department of La Paz consists of two equal horizontal stripes, ponceau red above emerald green. The red symbolizes blood shed during the fifteen-year struggle for independence, and the green represents vegetation and hope. It was first raised on 31 July 1809 during the La Paz Revolution and was officially established as the department’s flag on 2 July 1987.
