History
The flag represents the Guatemalan department of Chimaltenango. Its departmental symbolism centers on the coat of arms, whose imagery includes Pacaya volcano, corn, a horse, and a colonial church to represent the region’s geography, agriculture, livestock traditions, and colonial heritage. The department’s flag identity was adopted in the late 1990s as part of a broader movement to give Guatemala’s departments distinct flags.
