1821 Flag of Hydra
#0663
#1121 · territorial
A dark blue flag with a red-edged white triangle pointing toward the hoist, charged with a bald eagle holding a traditional fly-whisk and war club.
The flag was adopted on 17 April 1960 after a 1959 high-school design contest won by Uinifareti Rapi Sotoa. It replaced the United States flag that had served as the territory’s official flag since 1900. The bald eagle represents U.S. sovereignty and friendship, while the fly-whisk and war club are traditional Samoan symbols associated with chiefly wisdom and the power to defend the islands. The white triangle represents the Manuʻa District, the blue sections represent the Eastern and Western districts of Tutuila, and the red edging symbolizes the ocean between Tutuila and the Manuʻa Islands.
