The flag of the Basque Country, known as the ikurriña, features a white upright cross over a green saltire on a red field.
The ikurriña was designed in 1894 by Sabino Arana and his brother Luis Arana, originally as the flag of Biscay. It was adopted by the Basque Nationalist Party in 1895, proposed in 1933 for the whole Basque Country, and officially hoisted by the Basque government on 19 October 1936. The flag was banned during Franco's regime, returned to public use in 1977, and was formally recognized as the official flag of the autonomous community of the Basque Country in the 1979 Statutes of Autonomy. Its traditional symbolism assigns the red field to the Biscayan people, the green saltire to the Oak of Guernica and the historic fueros of Biscay, and the white cross to Catholic devotion.
