#0200 · national
The national flag of Yemen is a horizontal tricolor of red, white, and black.
The current flag of Yemen was adopted on 22 May 1990 upon the unification of North Yemen and South Yemen. Its red, white, and black bands are Pan-Arab colors linked to the wider tradition of Arab unity. The colors are commonly understood to represent the blood shed for independence and unity, a peaceful and hopeful future, and the dark past.
Sabre and five stars added
A flag with an Arab sabre and five stars replaced the shahada design; royalists continued using it until 1970.
Republican tricolour introduced
North Yemen hoisted a red-white-black flag with a green star on November 1, 1962, replacing the Kingdom flag as the republic's national flag.
Current flag adopted
The unified Republic of Yemen adopted the red-white-black tricolour without the North's green star on May 22, 1990.
