The flag of Uganda features six horizontal stripes of black, yellow, and red repeated twice, with a white central disc bearing a grey crowned crane facing the hoist.
Uganda adopted this flag on 9 October 1962 at independence. Its six equal horizontal stripes are black, yellow, and red repeated twice, with a white disc at the center bearing a grey crowned crane facing the hoist. Black symbolizes the people of Africa, yellow represents Africa’s sunshine, and red stands for African brotherhood. The crane was chosen for its gentle nature and had earlier been used as a badge for Ugandan soldiers under British rule; its raised leg signifies forward movement. The design was proposed by Grace Ibingira after an earlier Democratic Party design was rejected.
