History
The flag of Sumy Oblast was officially adopted on 23 February 1999, after Ukraine’s 1997 law allowed regional authorities to establish their own symbols. Its blue field represents the sky, peace, and the unity of the region. The gold elements reflect the national colours of Ukraine and symbolize both the oblast’s place within the country and its agricultural wealth. The coat of arms includes a golden helmet recalling the area’s origins in Kievan Rus, a golden ear signifying the long importance of farming, and a golden cross representing enduring spiritual heritage.
