The flag of England is derived from St George’s Cross, the red cross associated with Saint George, the country’s patron saint. Its use as an emblem of England can be traced to the Late Middle Ages, and the design was formally adopted in 1552. It became the only saint’s flag permitted in public after the English Reformation, served as the maritime White Ensign, and was later incorporated into the Union Flag in 1606.
