The flag of Lebanon features two red horizontal bands separated by a wider white band, with a green cedar tree centered in the white stripe.
The current flag of Lebanon was adopted on 7 December 1943. It has proportions of 2:3 and is credited to Henri Philippe Pharaoun. The red bands symbolize the blood shed in defense of the nation, the white band represents the snow-capped Lebanese mountains as well as purity and peace, and the cedar tree stands for steadiness, immortality, resilience, and hope. The cedar is a native and historic emblem of Lebanon, and its fully green hue was standardized in 1990.
Cedar flag first recorded
The first recorded use of a white flag with a green cedar was as a Maronite flag, an early design antecedent.
