History
Iran’s current national flag retains the green, white, and red tricolor used in the early 20th century and was adopted in its present form in 1980 after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The former lion-and-sun emblem was replaced by a stylized emblem designed by Hamid Nadimi. The central emblem forms the word “Allah” in Arabic and is also associated with the five pillars of Twelver Shi'a Islam. The repeated “Allahu Akbar” inscription appears 22 times, commemorating 22 Bahman, corresponding to 11 February 1979. The colors are commonly associated with Islam and growth, peace and honesty, and courage and the blood of those who died defending the nation.
