History
The Karenni Nationalities Defence Force used this flag after its formation in 2021 in response to the Myanmar coup. The bronze drum emblem draws on longstanding Karenni symbolism. In this standardized modern form, the drum includes a twelve-pointed star representing the twelve historic Karenni principalities, with frogs and fish in surrounding rings reflecting wetlands, fertility, rivers, lakes, and Karenni livelihoods. The design continues a broader Karenni flag tradition that had earlier variants in the 1980s and 1990s.
