Historical flag of the Cretan State featuring a white Greek cross on a blue field with a red canton bearing a white five-pointed star.
The flag was used by the Cretan State from 1898 to 1913, when Crete functioned as an autonomous province under Ottoman suzerainty. Its design combined Greek and Ottoman elements: the white cross on blue expressed the island’s Hellenic identity, while the red canton with a white star represented Ottoman overlordship. It remained in use until Crete’s formal union with Greece in 1913.
