The national flag of Colombia is a horizontal tricolor of yellow, blue, and red, with a broad yellow band above narrower blue and red stripes.
Colombia officially adopted this flag on 26 November 1861. It traces its origins to the flag of Gran Colombia devised by Francisco de Miranda and carried by Simón Bolívar during the wars of independence. A vertical version with a central white eight-pointed star was used after 1834 before the present horizontal design was restored. The yellow is associated with natural resources, wealth, the sun, agriculture, and justice; blue with the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, rivers, sky, loyalty, and vigilance; and red with the blood shed for independence and the determination of the people.
Gran Colombia adopted the tricolor
The Congress of Gran Colombia adopted the yellow, blue, and red colors that form the flag’s historical basis.
New Granada changed stripe orientation
New Granada adopted the colors in vertical stripes, changing the earlier horizontal arrangement.
Current arrangement adopted
The flag returned to horizontal stripes, with yellow occupying the upper half and blue and red sharing the lower half equally.
Country name changed on flag
The inscription “United States of Colombia” on the flag changed to “Republic of Colombia.”
Flag design regulated by decree
Decree 861 regulated the flag’s design, reaffirming its horizontal yellow, blue, and red arrangement.
