The flag of Brunei features a yellow field crossed by broad white and black diagonal bands, with a red national crest centered over the stripes.
The basic yellow, white, and black design was introduced in 1906 when Brunei became a British protectorate. The red national crest was added on 29 September 1959 with the promulgation of the constitution. The flag has proportions of 1:2 and was retained after full independence on 1 January 1984. The design is credited to Pengiran Muhammad Yusuf.
