A dark blue field bearing eight gold stars: seven form the Big Dipper and one larger star at the upper fly represents Polaris, the North Star.
The flag of Alaska was adopted on May 2, 1927. Its design was created by Benny Benson after winning a territorial flag contest with roughly 700 entries. The blue field represents the sky, sea, lakes, and the forget-me-not flower. The seven smaller stars form the Big Dipper in Ursa Major, symbolizing strength, and the larger star represents Polaris, signifying Alaska’s northern location and future statehood. The design was retained unchanged when Alaska became a state in 1959.
