the red band symbolizes Unalaska's location in the Aleutian Islands, which are volcanic. the 8-pointed star is actually combined from 2 4-pointed stars. the 1st pointed star represents Unalaska's population (4 thousand), and the other star represents the 4 compass directions, symbolizing guided-ness in the community. the gold color symbolizes the localized mineral history in Unalaska, as gold were found in random mineral piles in Unalaska. the circle in the star turns the star into a gear, representing the hardworking spirit of Unalaskans. the 2 wavy bands represent the fact Unalaska borders both the Bering Strait and the Pacific Ocean. white represents the city's environment, with ice and snow and all that stuff. it also represent PEACE. now, I only have the black bands to talk about. the black sides symbolize the traditions of the Aleut, which have literally inhabited Unalaska for thousands of years. the black bands also symbolize protection and strength. the 2 bands of the white and black symbolize literally the 2 main communities of Unalaska: Unalaska and Amaknak. this shows how similar and together the communities are.
