Banner of arms of Skåne County in Sweden, showing a golden crowned griffin head on a red field.
Skåne län uses a heraldic banner of arms rather than a shield placed on a plain field. The griffin has been a symbol of Scania since at least the mid-17th century, after the province passed to Sweden in 1658. The present county council banner was formally adopted on 9 February 1999 and replaced earlier informal or incorrect flag designs. It is used alongside the Swedish national flag, the European Union flag, and the regional council’s own standard when the council is in session.
