Red flag with one large gold star and four smaller gold stars in the upper hoist-side canton of the People's Republic of China.
The flag of the People's Republic of China was adopted on 1 October 1949 and was designed by Zeng Liansong. According to the provided research memo, the red field symbolizes the Communist revolution and also a traditional ethnic color of the Han majority. The large star represents the Chinese Communist Party, while the four smaller stars originally represented four social classes united under the Party; later interpretations have also associated them with the country's ethnic minorities. Each smaller star points toward the larger one to signify unity.
Five-star design created
Zeng Liansong designed the five-star flag in 1949, submitting a proposal that included a hammer and sickle in the large star.
First national flag standards implemented
Mandatory national standards for flag manufacture and color took effect on December 1, 1991.
Flag standard revised
China revised its national-flag production standard for the first time.
Revised flag standard took effect
The GB 12982-2004 national flag standard replaced the 1996 standard and took effect on July 1, 2004.
