The flag of Macau shows a green field with a white lotus above a stylized white bridge and water, topped by an arc of five gold stars.
Macau adopted this regional flag on 20 December 1999, when sovereignty passed from Portugal to the People's Republic of China. The design was approved in 1993 by the National People's Congress. Its five-star arrangement mirrors the national flag of China and represents Macau's status as a Special Administrative Region under the principle of one country, two systems. The lotus is Macau's floral emblem, and the bridge and water refer to the territory's port character and maritime setting.
