Flag of Nouvelle-Aquitaine: a white field with three vertical wavy blue bands at the hoist and a red lion rampant on the fly.
Nouvelle-Aquitaine adopted this flag in 2016 after the 2015 merger of the former regions of Aquitaine, Limousin, and Poitou-Charentes. The red lion is a historic emblem of the Dukes of Gascony and Guyenne and has been associated with the area since the 11th century. The three blue wavy bands refer to Aquitania, understood as “land of waters,” and symbolize the region’s rivers, lakes, and Atlantic coastline.
