The flag of New Mexico shows a red Zia sun symbol centered on a gold field.
New Mexico adopted this flag on March 19, 1925. Its design places a red Zia sun symbol on a gold field, combining a Puebloan symbol associated with the Zia people with the red and gold colors of old Spain, reflecting Indigenous and Hispanic heritage. The design was chosen in a contest organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution and created by Dr. Harry Mera, with Reba Mera producing the final flag. The Zia symbol derives from a pot from Zia Pueblo and represents the sacred number four, associated with the cardinal directions, seasons, times of day, and stages of life.
