Blue field with a bold gold saltire. At the center, a gold roundel shows a blue stylized kingfisher facing the hoist. Short blue arrowheads lie on each arm of the saltire pointing toward the corners, and gold three‑masted ships appear in the hoist and fly quarters—an emblematic banner for Halifax’s maritime municipality.
Adopted on 10 November 1998 and in municipal use from 1999, the flag is a banner of the Halifax Regional Municipality’s arms created after the 1996 amalgamation of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County. The gold saltire recalls the St. Andrew’s cross and echoes the provincial flag, while the blue field represents the harbour, sea, and waterways. The central kingfisher symbolizes the former City of Halifax; the gold 18th‑century ships signify Dartmouth’s maritime heritage; and the short blue arrowheads represent Bedford’s reach. The design highlights Halifax’s coastal setting and its historic role in trade and defence.
